Documentary challenges depictions of women in power
DeKALB – The DeKalb Area Women’s Center and the Northern Illinois University Public Relations Student Society of America will present a screening of a documentary challenging the media’s representation of women in power.
“Miss Representation” will be shown at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at the women’s center, 1021 State St. in DeKalb. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, this film exposes how mainstream media contributes to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence in America.
The media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful. Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem leave viewers shaken and with a new perspective.
