MURC members take on Hurricane Heater

SYCAMORE – Members of DeKalb County’s Moose (L)-Up Redemption Club (MURC) recently participated in a growing international adventure race called Spartan Race: Hurricane Heater.

The Hurricane Heater was born out of near disaster when Hurricane Irene hit last year and destroyed the local course for the Spartan Race, which was to be held the next day. Organizers switched the focus to team-building, mental games and physical stamina. The goal became to finish as a team. The event is a Spartan-style muddy adventure run that focuses on getting up when you’re knocked down and finishing what you start.

The event was at Cliffs Insane Terrain Park in Marseilles. The course is about nine miles long; race directors intentionally design it so participants get lost and have to double back, so the actual length is unknown.

Spartan Race Inc. is partnered with Homes For Our Troops, a charity dedicated to providing specialty homes for troops who have been severely injured. The goal of Spartan Race Inc. is to raise enough money to build a “Spartan” home for soldiers who have been injured while on duty.

What do you think of bus trips to sporting events?
I'd go; it's easier than driving
No thanks; I don't want to ride to the game with a busload of strangers
