Fifth grade students at St. Mary's School in Sycamore visited the Challenger Learning Center in Woodstock. The site is one of several sites across the country teaching children about space exploration, founded to honor the Challenger astronauts. The class conducted a "space mission," with half at "mission control" and the other half in "space." During their "mission" they discovered a new comet they named after their teacher.

More than 40 people attended a soup and chili cook-off March 23 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb. The event was coordinated by Terri Mann-Lamb, owner of Sunn Flower Gourmet Catering. Nine members of the congregation entered soups and chilis in the event. The meal was combined with a family game night. Awards, donated by Nathan Winston, were given in the categories of best soup, best chili and best overall. The judges were Monika Merryman, a local bread artisan, and Erwin Wittke, chef at the Holmes Student Center.
