Volunteers needed to drive cancer patients

Published: Tuesday, May 7, 2013 9:58 a.m. CDT

The American Cancer Society is urgently looking for volunteer drivers in all of its Chicagoland offices. Volunteers drive cancer patients to and from treatments for the Road to Recovery program.

This service is available for patients when no other form of transportation is available. These rides are provided at no charge and based on volunteer availability. This is a flexible volunteer role because you set your schedule and provide assistance when you are available.

Drivers must be 21 or older with a valid driver’s license and current auto insurance card. There are no weekend hours and orientation or training is offered.

In 2012, in DuPage County alone, volunteers provided 4,887 free rides to cancer patients to and from their life saving treatments and appointments.

Those who are interested in volunteering, or cancer patients in need of rides to treatment, can call the American Cancer Society toll free at 800-227-2345 or the regional office at 630-879-9009.
