Neighbors' House goes mobile
DeKALB – Neighbors’ House, a not-for-profit organization offering literacy and academic enrichment, has left its base at Fifth and Pine streets in DeKalb in favor of rotating sites.
Most Neighbors’ House programs, like Reading & Homework Clubs, Summer Reading Vacations, and Summer Art Vacations, take place throughout DeKalb County at income-eligible housing communities such as Gideon Court, University Village, Mason Manor, and Evergreen Village. These programs serve about 200 students throughout the year. Neighbors' House had also offered twice-weekly homework help nights at the Pine Street location; those events ended Aug. 31.
“Our facilities on the corner of Fifth and Pine in DeKalb have served us well for 10 years," director Kyle White said. "But we want to get out more and expand our Reading & Homework Clubs with our neighbors in multi-housing communities. We feel like, for Neighbors’ House, our resources are better used by being out and about."
