Talk on uncovering local history

Published: Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2013 10:22 a.m. CDT

DeKALB – Northern Illinois University alumnus Marissa McGrath will return to campus on Wednesday, Nov. 20, to present “Demystified: Uncovering the Women Who Shaped Our Communities.”

McGrath will speak at 7 p.m. at the Barsema Alumni & Visitors Center, 231 N. Annie Glidden Road. In this free presentation, she will discuss her small business, The Good Time Girls, which offers historical walking tours of Bellingham, Wash.

Bellingham is a pioneer town which boasted legally-regulated prostitution for 90 years, inspiring the Good Time Girls to write a tour exploring the community’s relationship with sex work. During her talk, McGrath will tell her audience how to research similar stories in their own community and how to mold that history into a narrative. She will talk about the challenges of rewriting history and engaging audiences.
