DeKALB – The past three years of high school have been a time of growth for Amanda Ericson – and her hair.

KIRKLAND – On Saturday, May 11, Kirkland Cub Scout Pack 82 hosted a Family Fun in the Park event geared toward the entire family, not just Cub Scouts. Kids could try a climbing wall, race cars down a Pinewood Derby track, launch water rockets and check out a fire truck. Other fun activities included a beanbag toss and face painting.
SYCAMORE – On Saturday, May 11, Sycamore Boy Scout Troop 40 and a few adults cleaned up the Joiner Cemetery in preparation for the Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27.
DeKALB – The DeKalb Area Retirement Center – Oak Crest residents and staff celebrated National Volunteer Week by recognizing their many volunteers with a dessert buffet. The theme for the evening was “Volunteers – Music to Our Ears.” A program of bluegrass and gospel music was performed by Truman’s Ridge.
DeKALB – The 2013 winner of the Kishwaukee Community Hospital Auxiliary’s Connie Bressler Spirit Award is Marion Baars, a true ambassador for the hospital and its entire staff.
SYCAMORE – University of Illinois Extension will host an informative emerald ash borer homeowner management workshop from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 30 at the DeKalb County Extension office, 1350 W. Prairie Drive in Sycamore. Extension educators will explain the history, life cycle and control options for emerald ash borer. There will be time for participants to ask questions.
GENOA – Recently, the Genoa-Kingston Middle School health department received grant money from the Genoa-Kingston Education Foundation and the DeKalb County Community Foundation to fund the CATCH program at Genoa-Kingston for the 2013-14 academic year.
DeKALB – The June Ellwood Explorers’ event is one for the whole family to enjoy together. Kids and parents will create a bug house that will make their gardens and yards more hospitable to helpful bugs that pollinate plants and eat harmful pests.
DeKALB – DeKalb Mayor John Rey and Fifth Ward Alderman Ronald Naylor traveled to Springfield on May 14 to defend their position on several issues threatening municipalities, including the instability of the local government distributive fund and rising pension costs.
DeKALB – Twelve sixth graders from Clinton Rosette Middle School in DeKalb were recognized and awarded certificates and ribbons from the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Alpha Sigma Chapter.
DeKALB – Jacob McArtor recently received the Eagle Award, the highest award the Boy Scouts of America presents, as a member of Boy Scout Troop 33, sponsored by First Lutheran Church in DeKalb.
