DeKALB – Comic-book enthusiasts love the first Saturday in May.
DeKALB – The Northern Illinois University School of Music presents the spring concert “Broadway Dreams,” featuring the NIU Concert Choir, the University Chorus and guest artist Melissa Dye, on Sunday, April 28. The concert will feature a variety of Broadway show stoppers from “Rent,” “Les Miserables,” “West Side Story,”“Show Boat” and many more.
DeKALB — April 25 through 28, Northern Illinois University School of Theatre and Dance will present a dance concert that demonstrates how dance has changed over time.
DeKALB – Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra presents its spring concert on Saturday, May 4. The concert will feature Piano Concerto No. 2 and Symphonic Dances, Op. 45 by Sergei Rachmaninoff and “Les Preludes” by Franz Liszt. Music director Linc Smelser will present a free pre-concert lecture beginning at 6:30 p.m. in room 173 in the Music Building.
BIG ROCK — Collections by Russian/American designer Irina Christensen will be modeled at the Couture Creations Fashion Show at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5 at Esther’s Place, 201 Route 30, in Big Rock.
MALTA – CAST Foundation’s fifth annual 5k Tractor Trot will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 8, in Malta. Proceeds this year will benefit Feed’em Soup Community Project. Feed’em Soup’s mission is “to empower our community by serving fresh food with compassion and respect in a restaurant quality environment to anyone – regardless of situation, background or ability to pay – while strengthening our community and nourishing hope.”
SYCAMORE – The spring series of the Four Seasons Gardening program, from University of Illinois Extension, continues with a session titled “All About Tomatoes: Strategies for Controlling Common Pests and Disorders” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 7 and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9. Both sessions will be presented via teleconference at the DeKalb County Center for Agriculture, 1350 W. Prairie Drive in Sycamore.
SYCAMORE – A fundraiser on April 27 will help a local family to cope with ongoing medical bills.
SYCAMORE – CASA DeKalb County will hold its third annual The Triple Crown fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 3, at Blumen Gardens in Sycamore.
SYCAMORE – “Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum,” the tale of “Jack and the Beanstalk,” will be performed by middle school students of St. Mary’s School in Sycamore on May 2 and 3. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. both nights in the St. Mary Parish Activity Center, 244 Waterman St. in Sycamore.
SYCAMORE – A handkerchief, while a simple item, has a very long and interesting history. Handkerchiefs have been used for more than 400 years – from kings, queens and lords, to the blushing bride on her wedding day. Elaine Goodwin will share her knowledge about handkerchiefs and display her personal favorites during the Sycamore History Museum’s May 2 Brown Bag lunch program.
DeKALB – Experience the music and dance traditions of Peru during a free performance scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at Conexion Comunidad, 637 N. 11th St. in DeKalb.
DeKALB – The Ellwood House Museum will host “ANTHROTROPISM,” an M.A. thesis exhibition by Agnes Ma, April 25 through Sept. 27. An opening reception will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, April 25 in the Brauer Gallery on the second floor of the Visitor’s Center.
DeKALB – At the next Bright Futures program, students will learn that April’s strong, gusty winds are good for more than just flying kites. The program, “Fun with Wind Energy,” will introduce elementary and middle school students to alternative energy and the science behind wind turbines.
